Checking Your RAM

Finding out how much RAM your computer has is a key first step to understanding why the Minecraft Has Run Out of Memory error is occurring. It is also important to know before trying some of the fixes that we have on our site, fortunately it is very easy to check.

  1. Go into your Start menu and open up the Control Panel.
  2. Select “System” from the options.
  3. In the window that opens look down to the section labelled “System”.
  4. From there you will be able to see how much RAM you have installed under “Installed Memory (RAM)”.

Below is a video that should help you with this process:

At the very least 2GB of RAM is recommended to run Minecraft (and this will likely be on the lowest settings). A full list of system requirements can be found on our System Requirements page.

If your PC doesn’t have enough RAM to run Minecraft at the minimum level then you may have to consider upgrading your computer. We have a page about this here.

If your PC has more RAM than 2GB then you may benefit from increasing the amount of memory allocated to Minecraft, which we show you how to do here.
